How to wait in faith

Waiting on God can be challenging, but it is an essential part of deepening our faith.

The Bible is full of stories of those who waited on God, trusting Him even when the outcome was unclear. Joseph waited years while in prison, not knowing when or if his circumstances would change, yet God was faithful. Joseph’s journey reminds us that even in seasons of waiting, God is still working.

Genesis 39:21 says, “But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love.” Joseph’s time in prison wasn’t wasted; it prepared him for the role God had planned for him.

Abraham, too, waited many years for the fulfillment of God’s promise of a son. His faith was tested, but Romans 4:20-21 tells us, “He did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”

Like Abraham, when we face delays or silence, we can stand firm in faith, trusting that God’s promises are sure.

Read the Word of God

Spending time daily in the Bible prepares you for those inevitable moments of doubt. Having a verse ready to counter the flesh or the enemy’s attacks is key to waiting patiently and maintaining faith. Just as Joseph held on to God’s promises during his time in prison, we can rely on scripture to guide us.

Study the Word of God

The Bible reveals God’s faithfulness and trustworthiness time and again. Reflect on what He has already done. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Have confidence that your wait will not be in vain, just as Abraham did when he awaited Isaac.

Pray

As 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “pray without ceasing.” Share your concerns and doubts with God as they come to mind. Prayer is not just about asking but also about aligning ourselves with God’s timing.

Rest

Resting can be a battle in itself. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, hold on to Jesus’ invitation to lay down your burdens, and He will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). This is not about inactivity but about trusting that God is working even when we can’t see it. This is a time to release any checklists you’ve created for yourself to speed things along. Stay as present as possible.

Surrender

Waiting for a new beginning can be exciting yet exhausting. We often want to know the details and arrive at the moment, but we miss the significance of the endings we grieve or celebrate. Rather than focusing on what’s next, ask God what He is doing right now. Your waiting is purposeful, even if you don’t fully understand it yet.

Continue to wait in faith. The Lord is with you.
