The road to following Jesus is a long one.
Does Jesus have your ‘Yes’?
What promises are you trusting the Lord for that you have not seen yet?
Romans 8:24 states “For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees?” (ESV)
Are you giving Jesus, a hollow yes that floats in the middle of doubt? Are you working like never before to be noticed by Jesus?
I can’t count the number of times, I have told Jesus that I trusted him only to turn around and depend on myself. I can’t count the number of times, I have told Jesus yes wholeheartedly while my body moves towards a no. Anxiety settles in and immediately starts planning the backup plan for when I think God will fail me.
But that time never comes. He has never failed me. And He will never fail you.
If our yes to God is half-hearted, then we can safely say it’s more of a no. I don’t feel too comfortable telling God no.
I know the limitations of my flesh in thinking clearly. I will never be more wise and knowledgeable than God. So why do we take this journey of giving Jesus a hesitant head nod?
Fear.
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (1Timothy 1:7 ESV)
Is that not the scripture that first pops into our head while we continue to power through in fear?
The illusion of control in my life keeps me from giving God my full yes. I know that I did not get myself the career but am I not the one working hard at it? I know that He gave me the roof over my head but do I not make sure the bills are paid on time?
We must not confuse our efforts with independence. Let’s swing back around to the hope that we have.
If I can trust God with my eternal life, is it too much to trust that He will take care of me now?
Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all —how will he not also, along with him, freely give us all things. (Romans 8:32 ESV)
After giving Jesus our yes, the next step is to await instruction.
This is perhaps where the control pops in and we have to take it from here.
We know what to do but not how to do.
There are times when we take the big leap and then we hear silence instead of the next thing to do. I believe that after making life-changing obedient decisions, our minds automatically assume we will receive life-changing results. Immediately. What do we do when we quit the job and do not have a new one the next week? What happens when we join the church but don’t have our spot on the praise team? Where do we go when we lose everything to follow Christ?
While these situations can be scary and may bring doubt, there’s also incredible freedom. The peace that flows from obedience is beyond words.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 ESV)
Pray this prayer as you continue to commit to giving Jesus your yes
Father,
Thank you for giving me life. With that life comes choices that you do not leave me alone to make. You are the God of wisdom. Without you, I would struggle in every moment of life but you hold me up with your righteous love. I thank you for your guidance. I thank you for your grace when I forsake your guidance. When I stumble in the dark you are a light to my path. I humbly ask for forgiveness when I ignore your wisdom. I ask for you to humble me and give me direction. You have my yes Lord. Match my heart with my words.
I love you.
In Jesus name, Amen.
